What do you infer when you hear ‘organic honey’? Don’t
worry, as it isn’t any synthetic form but is raised in a controlled setup
without the use of any harmful substances. In simple terms, ‘organic’ is a term
used to label the way the products are nurtured and or processed.
I wasn’t aware about the actual division of organic honey
from natural honey, until I visited one of the centers where this special form
of honey is manufactured. Let us understand the actual setup in which organic
honey is raised to properly learn about its existence.
Organic Honey
Considering most cases, the honey is organic when it is
acquired from its natural location, that is, the bee hive. As per quality
standards, any type of food product is labeled as organic when it is grown in
safe soil, with no modifications and should be kept discrete from conventional
products. The presence of bioengineered genes, unnatural pesticides or other
synthetic products for preparing or storing honey is prohibited.
It is important to
know that, honey is collected with the use of safe practices including a
natural bee hive. During these processes, the honey stays in its organic state.
There are chances that the honey might contain spores which can cause botulism,
a deadly infection. In order to prevent this, the honey is heated to
temperatures warm enough to eliminate the bacteria. Such techniques when
managed under the safety standards, have no effect over the organic state of
honey. The organic honey
market is on a rise due to growing demand for honey, not just
for food but for other applications as well.
Natural Honey
One must understand that, honey is indeed a natural
substance that is made by bees. Bee farmers are responsible for collecting it and
packaging for consumer purchase. Until the stage comprising of collecting and placing
honey in purchasable container, the product is completely natural. However, the
processing what the farmer or company does with the collected honey can change its
state from natural to unnatural. Moreover, natural honey that is nominally
processed is likely to be labelled as organic; however, the recognition stamp for
certification isn’t offered.
